Camillus House Solar Project

20kW kilowatts Rooftop Solar Installation

The Solar Retrofit Project at the Brownsville Christian Housing Center (BCHC), a Camillus House Permanent Housing Program, is the result of an experimental course to incorporate a hands-on approach to philanthropy for students at Florida International University (FIU). The course entailed a speech competition in which students represented their individually chosen non-profit organization in a race to win a $25,000 grant. Chloe Danielle Castro, a communication arts student, won the grant for IDEAS For Us, an international nonprofit organization and UN-accredited NGO whose mission is to develop, incubate, and fund local solutions to social and environmental issues around the World.

The funds were used to retrofit interior lighting and thermostats, as well as the installation of a 20-kilowatt solar photovoltaic array on this Camillus House property. Citizen Energy, Advanced Roofing Inc. and its sister company Advanced Green Technologies also provided support for the project with additional funding and in-kind contributions. Thanks to AGT, the project was also awarded a solar rebate from Florida Power and Light (FPL), which allowed for the team to double the solar array from the initial 10 Kilowatts to 20 kilowatts.

The project is expected to help lower utility bills for Camillus House by 20% while powering a portion of their building from clean renewable energy. The savings will ultimately allow the charity to allocate more of its funding to their mission of helping people in need.
