Why Bahamas operators are moving now
Three problems, one system
Energy is one of the three largest operating costs for a Bahamian resort or manufacturer, and it is the one you control least. Here is what we hear from operators across the islands.
Bills you can't forecast
The fuel charge moves quarterly with oil prices, so an energy budget set in January can be wrong by June. Solar fixes the price of a large share of your kWh for 25 years.
Outages that cost more than the power
Load shedding on New Providence and extended Family Island outages mean spoiled inventory, idle shifts, guest refunds and diesel bills. Batteries carry the critical loads instantly, before a generator even starts.
Dorian changed the math on resilience
After 2019, insurers, lenders and guests all ask the same question: what happens to this property when the grid goes down for weeks? Solar and storage designed to HVHZ standards is the credible answer.
What you’re paying today. Commercial BPL customers pay a base tariff plus a fuel charge that is passed straight through from world oil prices. In 2023 the commercial fuel charge alone was scheduled to climb past 27¢ per kWh. Figures are from public utility and regulator sources; we verify your actual tariff from your bills.
Interactive estimator
Size a solar + battery system for your facility
A first-pass estimate from your monthly BPL bill. It tells you roughly how much solar fits, how large a battery you need to carry critical loads through an outage, and what that offsets. Our engineers refine it with your interval data.
Your facility
All fields are editable, including the rate.
First-pass system
Estimates only. Assumes about 1,500 kWh per kW per year of production, 95 sq ft per kW of roof area, 90% usable battery capacity and a 30% peak factor. Final sizing depends on your interval data, roof structure, utility tariff and interconnection limits.
Who we build for in The Bahamas
Built for facilities where downtime has a price
Commercial and industrial properties with a meaningful energy bill and loads that can’t wait for the grid to come back.
Resorts & hotels
Nassau, Paradise Island, Exuma and the Out Islands. Daytime cooling and laundry loads line up almost perfectly with solar production.
Manufacturing & industrial
Freeport and the Grand Bahama free-trade zone, bottling, building products and light assembly where an outage stops the line.
Marinas, private islands & large estates
Properties that already run on generators and want to cut fuel deliveries by 60–80%.
Food distribution & cold storage
Where every hour without power is written off inventory.
Water & desalination
RO plants are ideal battery-backed loads: steady, predictable and critical.
Commercial centers & offices
Shopping centers, office campuses and medical buildings on New Providence.
Scope of work
One contractor from engineering to energization
AGT is a turnkey EPC with in-house engineering, electrical, roofing, crane and logistics divisions. There is no hand-off between a designer, an installer and an electrician — and no one to point fingers at when the storm comes.
Rooftop, carport and ground-mount solar
Designed to the wind loads your island actually sees, with attachment and ballast engineering, not catalog assumptions.
Battery energy storage (BESS)
Sized for your critical loads: from hours of outage ride-through to full microgrid operation for days at a time.
Microgrid controls & generator integration
Solar and batteries carry the base load; your existing generators become the backup to the backup and burn far less fuel.
Island logistics from South Florida
AGT is headquartered in Fort Lauderdale. Equipment ships in days, not months, and our crews rotate on direct flights to Nassau and Freeport.
Roof condition & re-roof coordination
Our sister company Advanced Roofing can assess, repair or replace the roof before the array goes on, so you never pull panels off early.
Interconnection, permitting & utility paperwork
We manage the application, studies and inspections with the utility and local authorities from start to energization.
Operations & maintenance
Monitoring, preventive maintenance and storm-response service plans with a 24/7 remote team.
How the work runs
From your utility bill to a commissioned system
Projects in The Bahamas are managed from AGT’s Fort Lauderdale headquarters, about 180 miles from Nassau.
Remote assessment
Send us 12 months of utility bills, roof or site plans and your outage history. We model loads, backup needs and a first-pass system size from Fort Lauderdale before anyone gets on a plane.
Site visit & engineering
Our engineers and drone survey team visit the property, verify the roof structure, electrical service and interconnection point, and return a stamped design with a fixed scope and price.
Procurement & logistics
Hurricane-rated modules, racking, inverters and batteries are staged and containerized in South Florida, then shipped with the customs and import paperwork handled.
Install, commission, monitor
AGT crews lead the installation with vetted local trade partners, commission the system with the utility, and monitor performance and battery health from our Florida operations center.

Frequently asked questions
Can a commercial system in The Bahamas connect to the BPL grid?
Yes. BPL and the regulator (URCA) operate renewable generation interconnection programs for grid-tied customers, and larger facilities can also run as self-consumption or islanded microgrids. We handle the application and the utility’s technical review as part of the project.
How does the system handle a hurricane?
Modules, racking and attachments are engineered to the wind speeds required in Miami-Dade’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, which is the strictest wind code in the United States. Batteries and inverters are installed in rated enclosures above flood elevation. We also design a pre-storm shutdown and post-storm restart procedure with your facility team.
Do we still need our diesel generators?
Usually you keep them, but they run far less. Solar and batteries cover normal operation and the first hours of an outage; the generator only starts for extended events, and it runs at an efficient load with the battery smoothing the peaks. Most clients cut generator fuel by well over half.
Are there duty or tax concessions for solar equipment?
The Bahamas has offered customs duty concessions on solar panels, inverters and batteries. The details change with each budget, so we confirm the current treatment with your customs broker and reflect it in the proposal.
How long does a project take?
A remote assessment and budget takes about two weeks. From signed contract to energization, a rooftop solar and battery project typically runs four to eight months depending on equipment lead times, shipping and the utility’s interconnection timeline.
Who services the system after installation?
AGT monitors every system we build from our Florida operations center and provides scheduled maintenance and storm response. Where it makes sense we train a local electrical partner for first-response work, with our team on call.
