Commercial Solar Energy Trends 2022

Solar Energy Trends for 2022

Learn About the Solar Energy Trends for Commercial Buildings and Businesses Located in Florida

As we wrap up the first quarter of 2022, we remain busy with solar installations throughout the state of Florida, with one of the most extensive backlogs we’ve ever experienced. The worldwide materials shortage continues to be a big problem, especially regarding pricing. We’re all seeing and feeling these cost fluctuations in our daily lives. As a company, we are having difficulty getting prices from manufacturers, so our contracts will note that materials pricing will be confirmed at the time of the order.

This worldwide shortage of raw materials has created many challenges for construction and solar, with everything considerably behind production schedules. We are working with all our customers to navigate these waters by using our purchasing power, longstanding relationships, and inventory to secure and stockpile items which put us in a better position than most. We can purchase and store materials to get them to you quickly with seven buildings throughout Florida.

We’re excited to welcome Julia Barton to our Business Development team at Advanced Green Technologies. Julia and the team are busy with a robust backlog of solar projects throughout Florida, and the demand for solar carports and roof systems is forecast to increase into 2023.

Demand for Solar Heating Up in 2022

Overall demand for commercial solar will remain strong for the next three years as the Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) phases down from 26% to 10% after 2023. The credit drops to 22% next year, so if you’re considering solar, give us a call as soon as possible to get the most savings.

There are a few new projects in the pipeline that we’re excited about, including a large-scale commercial battery energy storage system (BESS). We are also working on a few notable projects, including installing a solar roof at Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems America in Orlando. The 1.715 mW roof features Astronergy CHSM72M – HC 415W panels with a PanelClawFR ten racking and Canadian Solar 100KW inverters. The system has a potential energy offset of 13% of Mitsubishi’s total energy usage and will be completed in October of this year, so stay tuned.

We’re also breaking ground at four sites within the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Big Cypress Reservation. The total 448.49kW system features a combination of a solar roof, carport, and ground-mounted arrays, using Chint inverters and a Flexgen Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at each location. These systems are a first of their kind in Florida, with the ability to provide control over the utility grid, diesel generators, solar inverters, and the BESS at the same time.

The Tribe will have the ability to power its critical infrastructure in an outage, smooth-rolling brownouts (an intentional or unintentional drop in voltage in an electrical power supply system, used for load reduction in an emergency), and reduce utility demand without ever touching a button with the state-of-the-art Flexgen control system, batteries, and the AGT solar arrays.  The solar arrays will replenish the batteries daily in a long-term outage, providing long-term resiliency with the existing diesel backup generators.

Hurricane Season is Coming

Even though we just entered spring, our team is hard at work preparing for the upcoming hurricane season. This is the perfect time to have us inventory your roof to check for debris, drainage, etc. We will have materials on hand throughout the season, though I’m unsure how much. We may need to provide temporary patches before installing a permanent solution. Customers can rest assured that we will be on top of our game, as we’ve always been, getting your buildings safe as soon as possible.

Join us for our online webinar “Hurricane Season Preparedness: Are Your Commercial Rooftop, HVAC, and Solar Equipment Ready?” on May 5 from 11 am to 12 pm. We’ll go over tips to prepare your commercial roofing system, HVAC, solar energy equipment for a hurricane or significant storm, and more. Register here.

Looking Forward

As we know, it’s getting increasingly difficult to predict the future, but Florida’s economy continues to look bright, with lots of growth and money flowing into the state. Historically, as real estate prices increase, people spend more on their roofs. But the shortage of materials and labor will continue to be a challenge for our industry, one of the biggest I’ve experienced in the 40 years. The labor shortage continues with no end in sight, even as our company provides raises and expands its recruiting efforts beyond state lines.

These challenges will continue throughout 2022, with the first quarter of 2023 hopefully seeing some sort of normalcy with materials and pricing, so hang in there. As always, we will continue to provide exceptional customer service that hopefully makes navigating the challenges of these past few years a bit easier. Let’s make it a great rest of the year, hoping for a brighter and peaceful 2023!

Advanced Green Technologies acquires MSC Electric

Acquisition Brings an In-House Electric Contracting Team To Meet Surging Corporate Demand for Solar Energy

As corporate demand for solar energy rises, a strategic acquisition brings Advanced Green Technologies (AGT), Florida’s largest commercial solar contractor, a veteran in-house electric contracting team to streamline schedules and trim costs.

AGT’s parent company, Advanced Roofing Inc., today announced it has acquired Davie, Florida-based electrical contractor MSC Electric Inc.

““Adding MSC’s proven talent to our team enables us be a single, cost effective source for commercial clients who’ve committed to meet aggressive renewable energy goals,” said Clint Sockman, vice president of both AGT and Advanced Roofing. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Founded in 2001 by Michael Cervone, a Florida Licensed Unlimited Electrical Contractor, MSC Electric is a longtime subcontractor for AGT on major solar energy projects. Cervone will serve as AGT’s electrical division manager overseeing all electrical functions, from design through installation, for solar rooftop, solar farm and solar carport solutions.

“As more Fortune 500 and other high-profile companies commit to be carbon neutral by 2025 or 2030, their need to produce enough renewable energy is pushing demand for commercial solar energy to record levels in Florida,” said Sockman. “Once corporations adopt policies to reduce their sizeable carbon footprints, the clock is running. They must consider all alternatives based on their real estate portfolios, and we find rooftop solar arrays and solar carports are always under discussion.”

Sockman expects Advanced Roofing’s revenues, which topped $95 million in 2018, to continue growing this year, fueled in part by the rise in solar energy demand. “The vision of corporate America is clear. They need to quickly find ways to produce more renewable energy,” he said. “Fortunately, the economics of solar energy has never been better.”

Availability of federal tax credits for 30 percent of commercial solar energy installations’ costs until year-end 2019 is boosting corporate clients’ sense of urgency, Sockman said. “Our pipeline is seeing significant growth as more companies realize they can access tax credits by spending at least five percent of a project’s estimated costs by year-end,” he added.

Acquiring MSC Electric is the latest vertical integration step for AGT and Advanced Roofing, a diversified corporation whose additional Florida licenses include Roofing Contractor, General Contractor, Solar Contractor, and Air Conditioning Contractor.

AGT Named Florida’s Top Commercial Solar Contractor for 2015

Advanced Green Technologies Earns Top Solar Contractor Ranking

2015-TOP-SOLAR-CONTRACTOR-FLORIDA-ADVANCED-GREEN-TECHNOLOGIES

Ranked #1 in Florida for fourth consecutive year; 29th in the nation for commercial solar installations

Advanced Green Technologies (AGT) earns the Top Commercial Solar Contractor ranking in the State of Florida for the fourth consecutive year, and 29th in the nation by Solar Power World for 2015, the solar industry’s leading media resource.

The top solar contractors’ list was created by Solar Power World four years ago to offer the industry an inside look at how solar companies stack up against one another. Starting with only 100 contractors in 2011 the list has grown to 500 for 2015 and broken down into multiple categories including residential, commercial and utility markets.

With more than 43 Megawatts installed for 2014, AGT leads the industry as the highest-volume commercial solar contractor in the State of Florida and 29th in the nation. This ranking is the fourth consecutive year that AGT has earned the top honor. Additionally,  the ranking marks an upward swing not only for the company but also for the Florida solar energy market as a whole, signifying demand for both rooftop and solar carport solutions. Rankings are based solely on annual kilowatts installed.

“We’re proud to continue to be the top commercial solar contractor in the state, building sustainable projects that help organizations meet their bottom line while producing clean energy,” said AGT President Michael Kornahrens.  The projects we completed in 2014 demonstrates solar energy’s potential to improve sustainability for Florida’s private sector and is a shining example of our company’s decades of experience handling complex projects in all sectors,”

The Solar Power World ranking came on the heels of another big honor for the company in 2015.  AGT’s sister company, Advanced Roofing Inc. was recognized by the Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association with the First Place Award for Sustainability and the Best Overall Project of the Year Award for its roofing, waterproofing, and solar project scopes at the University of Miami Frost School of Music.

AGT wants to remind commercial building and business owners in Florida the most important financial incentive for installing solar energy systems, the 30% Federal Solar Tax Credit will be significantly reduced by the end of 2016.  Currently, you can subtract 30% of all solar energy system installation costs directly from your federal income tax payments, making for a quick return on investment.  After 2016, the cost of going solar will rise by at least 20%.  This increase can equal up to $1 Million in additional costs.  The proposal, due diligence, and corporate decision-making process for a solar project takes several months.  Now is the time to begin on the path toward energy independence, financial savings, and environmental sustainability.
